A man, grieving the death of his wife who fell down a staircase, is accused of murdering her.
The Staircase is based on the 2004 French-made true-crime docu-series of the same name by French writer-director Jean-Xavier de Lestrade, as well as various books and reports on the infamous case.
It tells the story of American novelist Michael Peterson (Colin Firth), his sprawling North Carolina family, and the suspicious death of his wife, Kathleen Peterson (Toni Collette), who was found dead at the bottom of the staircase in their home in 2001.
